What is the Charismatic Renewal?
Catholic Charismatic Renewal is a work of the Holy Spirit that has existed within the Catholic Church since 1967. It encourages a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ and emphasises the availability of the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit for all. Saint John Paul II described it as "a current of grace for the Church".
In 1967, some Catholics experienced the presence and power of God working in a new and deeper way in their lives. This experience of God, which they described as being “baptised in the Spirit”, drew them into a far deeper spiritual life than before. They wanted to give their lives more fully to God. They experienced his love more deeply, and appreciated even more deeply the spiritual riches to be found in the Catholic Church. This work of the Holy Spirit has spread throughout the Catholic Church all round the world. Pope Francis, in 2017, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Rome stated "the current of grace is for all the Church not just for some".
The Charismatic Diocesan Service of Communion (CDSC) exists to serve and co-ordinate the work of Catholic Charismatic Renewal in this area. This includes supporting prayer groups, running ‘Days of Renewal’, supporting Celebrate East Anglia and encouraging seminars and courses such as ‘Life in the Spirit’ seminars and 'The Gift'.
